With all of the hype surrounding the dieting industry today, the question on everyone’s lips is “Is hummus good for me?” I’m not going to sugar coat this issue or lie to you: there are many foods that have been known to give us weight gain. But there are so much more foods that have not quite earned their weight halos, so it’s worth asking: is hummus good for me?

First, let’s start with the definition of “good” as we move into answering “Is hummus good for me?” The Middle Eastern chickpea spread is a fairly simple snack that balances blood sugar and fights hunger in many ways, but if you ask me, the main point here is hummus. I’m not talking about a giant tub full of hummus that you can buy in any drug store for $1.99. I’m referring to the health benefits that come from eating hummus (and other Middle Eastern and South Asian dishes) in moderation.

When most people think of hummus, they picture eating it on crackers, pizza, or chips. But hummus can be a healthy food just like most other healthy foods. Well, that brings up the bad news: yes, you can eat too much of the “good” and the “bad.” This is not always an issue if you watch what you eat and make good decisions. However, if you eat a large amount of foods with little health benefit, it can be very hard to maintain the balance needed in a healthy diet. For instance, most people can eat hummus and get all the benefits of hummus but still gain weight. So if you want to lose weight, make sure you stay on a proper diet.

In addition, when you do lose weight, there is no way to get that weight off by cutting out foods that contain lots of health benefits. So the main goal of all weight loss plans is to maintain healthy eating and keep it that way.
